Road trip: Big Sur

The final road trip on the main land! Route 1 south to LAX

We were told last night by the guys in the bar that this trip will change us and many people had decided to move to California as a result. Wow it was stunning.

The weather started off quite foggy but when we got out of Monterey/Camel it quickly improved and soon we were hugging the coast and climbing.

About an hour south of Montery and just in the beginning of Big Sur park we stopped in the, apparently world famous, Big Sur Bakery. On the outside and inside it reminded us of the mountain café in Avie More and the food was just as delicious.

I had a candied bacon pastry which I thought was the best pastry I had ever had. Fiona had a raspberry strudel which she also said was the best pastry she had ever had. We could both agree they put Paris to shame.

Regretting that we would not be likely to return again (at least not for a long time) we also bought two chocolate macadamia nut cookies to enjoy on the drive later on.

After breakfast we resumed the drive but this time with the roof down and the road just got better and better. Every time we thought the view could not get better yet when we navigated round one peninsula an even more dramatic one appeared. Towards the end of Big Sur we stopped at McWay waterfall which is where the river meets the sea. Simply beautiful.

After the big sur we had about 150 miles of uneventful highway left to LAX. The traffic got quite bad in LA again but we made it in plenty of time for our flight to LA. Big Sur was the perfect send-off to a quite extraordinary and beautiful part of the world.
